Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Preparation and Training

Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Preparation and Training

Ebor Academy Trust, in partnership with HLTA North of England, is now able to provide a new and innovative HLTA programme suitable for both primary and secondary colleagues who are ready for the next step in their career. The preparation and training, which will include eight days of CPD and ensure HLTAs are equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to effectively carry out this role, will be based in York.

The training will consist of:
Four days preparation for accreditation and four days of valuable CPD critical to the role. There will be support for learners to complete:

  • A series of tasks based on a range of activities HLTAs are involved in, including lessons with an individual pupil, a small group and a whole class.
  • A portfolio of documentary evidence demonstrating how HLTAs have met each of the required accreditation standards

The assessment
This takes place online. It is carried out by an experienced HLTA Assessor, allocated to you by HLTA North and involves a series of interviews with you and nominated staff (there is no observation and we will prepare you for this).

Accreditation
HLTA status is awarded by the HLTA National Assessment Partnership (HNAP) to TAs who have been externally assessed against the HLTA Professional Standards and have successfully provided sufficient evidence to meet each standard. Assessments are managed by our Regional Providers, ‘HLTA North of England’ on behalf of HNAP. Further details can be found on the Partnership website at www.hlta.org.uk

Entry requirements
Candidates must have a Level 2 qualification in both English and maths. Examples of Level 2 qualifications that are acceptable include: GCSE Grades A*-C/9-4; Adult Literacy or Numeracy. We will need to see original certificates for both qualifications.

Headteacher support
Headteachers will be asked to confirm that candidates have demonstrated they are working at an appropriate level and have the capacity to work at HLTA standard. The standards can be found on the HLTA National Assessment Partnership website at www.hlta.org.uk

Course fees
The cost of the course is £1,495. The fee includes the costs of the HLTA North of England assessment.

What participants say

‘The opportunities to share knowledge and experiences in discussion with colleagues from other areas – Early Years, KS 1, 2, 3 and 4, has been especially valuable.’

‘The course was really well delivered, felt chilled but was pacy and packed full of information to help us become outstanding HLTAs.’
