Career Break

A career break is an opportunity to take upaid time out of work and focus on other areas of your life, such as caring for relatives or to pursue lifetime ambitions like travelling or engaging in training. With careers becoming more flexible, it is increasingly common for people to want to place work on hold for a while but maintain the security of having a familiar job to return to.  

Career breaks are available to all Ebor staff. To be eligible, staff:

  • must have successfully completed their probationary period
  • are not be subject to disciplinary or attendance management procedures
  • are not be subject to investigation as part of an attendance, grievance, or disciplinary process
  • cannot take other leave in parallel to a career break
  • should provide at least three months (support staff) or one term (teachers) notice.

Career breaks will generally start at the beginning of the academic year or the start of a new term and will last for a year. A career break must be approved by the Headteacher and the Director of People & Culture.  

If you wish to apply for career break, you need to do so in writing to your Headteacher or Director.
